Building the Foundation For High Response Rates with a Special Relationship

How To Build that Foundation and Assure Your Success

by Damian Leon

Building good rapport is essential to any relationship. How can you ensure that you’re starting off on the right foot with your audience in your marketing efforts?

Here’s a few ways to build the way people perceive you in the marketplace, and will help them to form natural bonds with them. These natural bonds will tear down the natural resistance that all potential buyers in a marketplace have to marketers.

Remember, just as if you meet someone in a social setting, you’re probably not too interested in what they know until they know how much you care.

You’ve probably heard this, and if you’ve ever read Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People, you’ll see that a feeling of importance and acknowledgment is what people are after, at their core level.

Remember, whatever marketplace you’re in, the primary thing you’re selling is hope and acceptance, and secondarily your products and services.

People connect with people before they make purchases. If there is trust and good connections there, buying, selling, and the general exchange of trust will be there also. It will flow naturally, with no need for ad pounding or hitting your list over and over with promotions.

You will promote and they want you to promote. But remember, to sell your personality first and sell the trust first. Then promotion will be a pleasure and not come across the wrong way. They need solutions to their problems.

They want to spend money to get there, but they want to pay people they like for things that work. Don’t forget any part of that statement!

It’s all in the spirit of the exercise. Where is your heart? Ask yourself this before you enter a new marketplace.

So, you know where your heart should be for maximum results in the quickest time possible. But, what are some practical things you can do to come across the right way and build that trust and rapport early on?

Here are some great ways to do that:

1) Let them know your intentions up front. Put some stories and color in there, and let your personality shine through. Remember, show a little vulnerability and be a real person. Everyone knows other people aren’t perfect, so if you are Mr or Miss Too Perfect, that will lose some trust!

2) Make your interactions entertaining as well as educational. Remember again to put in things like video, audio, pictures, stories and you’ll reach so many more people rather than just text alone.

3) Be sincere, and support enquiries and questions in a friendly way. This doesn’t mean to go overboard with long emails back and forth, but do answer in a timely manner and be friendly. Remember its so much easier to retain a good person on your list, than go get new ones!

4) Make every communication a pleasure, and ensure that people are seeing quality and associating with your name or your organization’s name. Yes, mistakes will happen of course, but just correct quickly and take ALL the blame. Throw in an extra bonus for their trouble! But, know when to cut the cord too when someone is being aggressive etc.

5) Surprise and delight whenever you can.

6) Have fun! Remember it comes through on your communications 100%. People are attracted to those they want to be like, and they want to be happy. So, if you’re out of balance and tiring yourself out trying to make everything happen TOO fast, then that will come through. Sometimes less is more!

7) Remember a List is an Audience. They are real people who need solutions and support, and to be cared about. Never forget that and you won’t go wrong!

    Hey Damien,

what can i say that hasnt been said before? If your not honest with your relationships then how can you expect them to take you seriously , the key to making sales to your customers is to have a repour with them whatever it is, be someone to everybody sort of biblical but its who i am, still keep that integrity and dignity of business related qualities within you at the same time.

The money is… in the list… i still believe that.

And, in the RELATIONSHIP you have with that AUDIENCE :)

    Hi Damian,

I like the various ways we as marketers must conduct ourselves if we're to overcome the reticence and bias that can be displayed by those we wish to do business with…the line about people wanting to buy from those who solve problems and have solutions that work is most apt. Thanks for your insight!

  • http://damianleon.com Damian Leon

Yes I really feel the same way- the people DO want to buy- if they can FIND the solution
that's delivered with RESPECT and value for them- now, we marketers sometimes definitely
mess it up and that's a shame- when if we focused on the relationship instead of the sale
we wouldn't need to worry about “making it happen” as much! :)

    Hi Damian,

Funny how people think alike. Awesome post this is the very thing that has been on my mind as I just started building my list. Thanks for the valuable information. I have implemented this into my AR as i build my list I am concentrated on giving value and helping others for like the first 30 follow ups getting to know my subscribers and building a rapport with them. Then after the 30th AR mesage I start recommendations and email marketing, at this point trust and relationship has been solidified. Very good information here, people would be wise to take action on it! Thanks Damian as always….

Just Some List Building Rants & Raves….

Do not be tempted to send an e-mail that is nothing more than a
promotional message every time you write to your list member. Do this only
once or twice and they will stop opening your mail.

Do not use a promotional approach that anyone with half a brain cell to call
their own could see through. The I've just discovered this fantastic new
product that I know you will love…? approach will not work. You do not know
the prospect, therefore you have no idea whether what you are
recommending is what they are looking for or not.

Don't shout at your prospect in your headline. Most of them are not
imbeciles and they do not need shouting at in your attempt to convince them
to do what you want them to do.

Please, please, please do not use prewritten e-mail sales messages that
you have downloaded from the affiliate area attached to the product which
you are promoting. Do this, and it is almost guaranteed that your prospect is
going to receive at least four or five identical e-mails all of which pretend to
be hyper enthusiastic about the product concerned. Result? They never want
to buy anything from you, ever!

Damian…excellent point you made there, your list is your audience. Most people don't realize also you are teaching your list along the way and not only do they become buyers, they become partners and marketers too. That's the key to success, not just the technolgy and the income.
And yes Everyone on the internet is a real person. (Most people anyway…lol) Kat

  • http://topworkoutsecrets.com/ Dr. Debra

    Hi Damian,

Thank you for the reminder that we are to be real people speaking to real people. I think it is easy to get caught up in the sales end and forget we are interacting with a person.

Also, that we are to be entertaining and engaging with our “audience”. We are marketing ourselves as you have pointed out in previous posts.

Then treat others as we like to be treated and definitely give solutions to their problems related to the niche we are in as well as other niches that are appropriate. We are to be givers and not takers… Have you read the book the Go Giver? It is a short read with profound principles along the line of what you have been saying.

    Keep up the good work!

    BIM,

How is this working for you?

My understanding is that if you wait too long to make offers available then people on the list get mad as you have trained them to just receive freely from you. It's weird…

Even just training them to click to get information or freebies helps to get folks used to clicking.

So, I am curious how your strategy is working.

  • http://topworkoutsecrets.com/ Dr. Debra

    That is great BIM, congratulations!

Any particular thing that made it all come together for you so quickly?

  • thebumblingidiotmarketer

    @Dr. Debra,

It qorks like a charm, see I am not giving freebies in excess, but establishing a relationship by personable emails asking for interaction, I poll them, ask about them and ask them to reply by introducing themselves and where they are at in their business so I can know how I can help them move forward, this establishes a bond and a relationship, after which I slowly introduce them to product I know will help them in their business….by this time trust has been established and they are more apt to purchase… See with me it's not all about training them to buy or click it's about laying down the foundation so they will purchase and click because the relationship and friendship has been established…..

    Justa Tip from the B.I.M.,

GOing into 2010 if you have not started to do so, now is the time to get laser focused and start your list. The importance of an optin list is just unbelievable. Build your list, Build your business. This is very true, until I started to build my list I was running all over the Internet getting nowhere, information overload was my constant companion. I was like a Bumbling Idiot. THus B.I.M. was born, so I decided to be smart and started Branding it all over the Internet,”THe BUmbling Idiot Marketer” only this time I was no fool.

See I made a decision one day that I ws going to find a mentor and get totally focused and give this business a shot. You my friends can do the same, it's not rocket science, just good old fashioned determination and common sense. Since then , it has been about what 15 days or so my list is 1.6k and growing, my business intact. And for the first time I am seeing success. See anybody can do it, and I am living proof. It's funny how you can never imagine where you could get to if you just take the action, any action towards what you want.

There are actually nice people out there top marketers like Damian who will take the time to help you no matter what skill level you are at…I was fortunate to find them and this was the turning point. So if you need someone to hold you accountable and keep you on task, if Damian is busy you can always come to me. Even though my list is small and my success only little I am giving back helping newcomers to build their list, their business.

Relationships this is key to making people stick, just be yourself. Write your Auto responder copy as if you were speaking to your best friend and watch in amazement as the results trickle in. If you ever get a messsage or email from your subscribers, always answer them personally in an email. Do this and you have a follower and a friend for life….. I wish you all the best success in 2010……Your Friend…..B.I.M.

  • http://topworkoutsecrets.com/ Dr. Debra

Wow BIM, your results are pretty spectacular. Did you already have your own product when you started the listbuilding campaign drive or were you promoting affiiate products? Did you enter giveaways or do ad swaps? How did you get the traffic?

With what you have accomplished so far I am sure you will only continue on in your success.

May 2010 bring you financial independence.

    Hi BIM,

I just noticed your reply and I think you have a good point about not “training” your list like we do our dogs, to regularly perform a certain action. I think you are wise to develop a true group of followers who know you have provided good solid information, cared about their needs and only promote that which you believe in and know will help them along in their journey.

Keep up the good work. I look forward to hearing about more of your successes in the future.

    Happy New Year,

It is great to be appreciated and get positive feedback from folks. I know how much it means to me when I have clients contact me to let me know their horse benefited from the treatment I provided.

I agree with Anthony, you rock BIM!

  • thebumblingidiotmarketer

    @Dr. Debra,

Sure I would love to share. First you need an irresistable offer, or as we like to say a great magnet offer. This will ensure that a prospoect opts into your list to receive this free offer. Depending on waht Niche you are targeting will setermine which type of offer to use. I built my list and business using PLR materials or (Private Label Right Materials) which I modified an example of such an offer would be here: http://nicheflippingguru.com

Next if your just starting out you can use several ways to drive traffic to your offer. Article marketing, Social Bookmarking,Video Marketing,Free Safelists, Web 2.0 sites…. ok so now you are starting to build your list depending on the magnet offer you have up will determine your conversion rates for subscribers I was fortunate to run 60-70% conversion rates on my offer….Rinse and Repeat…

When you have 300 subscribers on your list you can now take it to the next level by a simple method the big marketers usse to create massive lists. This method is known as “Adswaps”. Simply you hook up with other marketers in your niche and each agree to send each others offer to their list's, thus building their list's even faster. This method I utilized and still do to leverage and grow my list of subscribers…

Just a few tips I hope that helps everyone out…

    B.I.M.

  • http://topworkoutsecrets.com/ Dr. Debra

I keep re-reading this post and think it is one of your best ever. And I remember that what made me really take notice of you was when you emailed about your grandfather being so ill and asking for prayer for him. Then when I wrote to you that indeed I prayed for him and would continue, you actually emailed me back! I took much more notice of your mailings to me after that…

Not sure how people stay personal as their audience grows large but I hope you can maintain that type of intimacy with us.

    Happy New Year!

    Dr. Debra

  • thebumblingidiotmarketer

    I agree 100 % well said Thomas…

Relationship building is very important and how your subscribers will judge your character, since it is not in person but in email formatting words one has to be able to convey their honesty and sincerity through the written words…a fabulous study in and of itself….nice post Thomas keep up the great work!

    Hi Damian,

Just going through the posts and realized that I never received a reply on a couple of my questions.

First one was prior to the webinar and I asked if you could give us tips on subject lines that will get our emails read.

Second one was after the webinar about employing what you suggested:
When you do the videos and for example, I have a redirect domain name to my main affiliate product, do you have that redirect go straight to the affiliate's offer page or do you send to a single optin page first so you can build your list? Trying to figure out how to structure the redirect.

    Thanks,

    Dr. Debra

I keep thinking on this post more and more. Many gems in it….

And I also have been thinking that is so great about you is that what you share is not theory, it is part of the life blood of you business. You are real and are not just spouting theory but what is actually working for you.

I copying this into a text document so I can refer back to it and re-read on occasion to stay on track.

    Thanks again!

Thanks BIM. The site is very fancy looking and the copy compelling for sure. Looks great.

I am in the fitness niche and so far my subscribers have come from giveaways primarily. It is a little more difficult to find folks to do ad swaps with in my niche but it is doable or to cross-promote to another niche.

Thank you for sharing some of your tips.

Another great way to test ways to improve your conversion rates on your squeezepages is to try different strategies, think outside the box, don't be afraid to try new things that others are not using…

If you want…test this and see if your conversions skyrocket…Do you ask for peoples names on your optin form? alot of top marketers feel this is a waste of time and not necesssary, somepeople actually feel you are imposing and getting to personal…lol yes it;s true…on one of your squeezepages delete the name simply run email only on your optin box also delete the standard…Your email is safe I hate spammers tag line….you will be amazed at your results….
